Fr. Rene Regalado, 42, was found lifeless between 8 to 9 in the evening of January 24, 2021 near the Malaybalay Carmel Monastery in Malaybalay, southern Philippines.
According to the initial details, a priest heard gunshots at around 7:30 PM along the road of the monastery, which prompted police investigation. Fr. Regalado was then found dead, with his car parked nearby. He was reportedly on the way to St. John XXIII College Seminary, the place where he was staying.
A contusion, or a bruise was found near his left eye, and a shoelace was tied around his left hand.
The Diocese of Malaybalay, in an official statement, condemned the harrowing killing, and has expressed sympathy for the bereaved:
“We express our deepest sympathy to his immediate family and supplicate to the Lord of Life that justice will be served to the perpetrators of this heinous crime without compromising the Lord’s gift of mercy.
..We request everyone to offer prayers for the repose of the soul of Fr. Rene B. Regalado, for the consolation of his immediate family and the Clergy, for the immediate results of the investigation, and that justice will be served to whom it is due.”
Fr. Regalado is the fourth priest to be murdered in the country since 2017.
